Ilford was founded in 1879 in the English town of the same name. They are B&W royalty in the photography industry thanks to their 140-year heritage and their support for photographers with chemicals and development as well as film. In the mid-20th Century they produced several well-regarded camera lines (including one given to Princess Elizabeth that was later stolen!) but today they are focused on producing the best films and development processes that they can.

My favourite b&w film

I love the look of Ilford HP5. Has the slight edge over Tri-X and it’s cheaper. My scans were very contrasty. Fantastic vintage look and a good versatile speed. Perfect for the Revival festival.

Pushed to 1600

First film I have shot in 20+ years. Read a lot of reviews before opting for the Ilford HP5+. I haven't been disappointed! Decided to push to the film to 1600. The film must be very forgiving as I was playing around with the aperture and shutter speeds during my walk. I love the heavy grain that are in all the photos, as well as the dark and moody vibes of some shots taken around Beamish museum.

Versatile film stock

I love HP5+. This film produces good images when rated anywhere between 200 and 6400 iso. I particularly like the look when rated at 1600 and pushed 2 stops. Contrasty and not too much grain.

The exposure latitude of hp5+ means I feel it’s very forgiving of my slapdash approach to metering when shooting. Good value for money all rounder film. I also recently developed a roll at home using caffenol for the first time and it turned out better than expected.
